How to Send a GIF on WhatsApp From iPhone, and Fix Black GIFs

How to send GIFs on WhatsApp from an iPhone, why a shared GIF file can arrive as a black or frozen image, and how to send your own GIF so it plays.

WhatsApp makes sending other people's GIFs easy and sending your own surprisingly fiddly. Here's how both work on iPhone, and the one trick that fixes most broken GIFs. We tested this while building MemeYou in November 2026. WhatsApp changes often, so menus may differ slightly.

Send a GIF from WhatsApp's own library

  1. Open a chat and tap the sticker icon in the message field.
  2. Switch to the GIF tab.
  3. Search for a word like "wow" or "no" and tap a result to send it.

This is the fastest option, and it's the same small set of GIFs everyone else sends.

Send your own GIF

  1. In a chat, tap the + button and choose Photos.
  2. Pick the GIF or video from your library.
  3. Check the preview, then send.

If you're sharing from another app, use that app's share button and choose WhatsApp. This is where things can go wrong.

Why your GIF turns black or freezes

In our testing, an animated .gif file handed to WhatsApp through the iPhone share sheet could arrive black or frozen on one frame. The same animation saved as a short MP4 video arrived and played every time. WhatsApp shows it as a video with a play button rather than an endlessly looping GIF, but it moves, which is what matters.

So the fix is simple: send a video, not a .gif file. Many GIF apps have a "Save as video" or "Send as video" option for exactly this reason. MemeYou does this automatically when you choose WhatsApp, and its Send as Video button is there for any other app that misbehaves.

Make the video look like a GIF

  • Keep it short. One to three seconds feels like a GIF. Longer feels like a clip.
  • Loop it a few times. A video that repeats the loop three or four times reads as a GIF even with a play button.
  • No sound. A silent video doesn't startle anyone in a busy group chat.

Want the reaction to star you instead of a stranger? Here's how to make a GIF of yourself, with or without an app.

Common questions

Why does my GIF look black on WhatsApp?

In our tests, an animated .gif file shared from another iPhone app could arrive as a black or frozen image. Sending the same animation as a short MP4 video played normally.

Can I send a GIF on WhatsApp from my camera roll?

Yes. In a chat, tap the + button, choose Photos and pick the animation. If it arrives as a still image, export it as a video first and send that.

How do I find GIFs inside WhatsApp?

Tap the sticker icon in the message field, then switch to the GIF tab and search. These come from WhatsApp's GIF partners, not from your own photos.
