How to Turn a Live Photo Into a GIF on iPhone

Turn a Live Photo into a looping GIF on iPhone with Loop and Bounce, then export a real .gif file with the Shortcuts app. No extra app needed.

Every Live Photo already has about three seconds of motion in it. Your iPhone can turn that into a loop in two taps, and into a real .gif file with one free shortcut. Menu names here match iOS in November 2026 and may shift a little between versions.

Make it loop in Photos

  1. Open a Live Photo in the Photos app.
  2. Tap the Live menu near the top of the screen.
  3. Choose Loop to repeat it, or Bounce to play it forward and back.

Bounce hides a messy ending and suits nods, shrugs and eyebrow raises. Loop works when the motion naturally repeats, like a laugh or a wave. Sent in Messages, it plays as an animation.

Save it as a real .gif file

Some apps and websites want an actual .gif. The Shortcuts app can make one.

  1. Open Shortcuts and create a new shortcut.
  2. Add a Select Photos action, then a Make GIF action, then Save to Photo Album.
  3. Run it, pick your Live Photo, and the GIF appears in your library.

Shortcuts also has an option to make a GIF from a burst or a set of photos if you want a stop-motion look.

Tips for a better loop

  • Hold still for a beat. Live Photos capture moments before and after the tap, so start and end in the same pose.
  • Trim it. Shorter feels more like a GIF.
  • Mind WhatsApp. A .gif file can arrive frozen there. Send it as a video instead.

No Live Photo of the moment?

That's the usual problem: the reaction you want is one you never filmed. MemeYou generates a looping reaction from a single selfie, so you can have the gasp without catching it on camera. It's generated rather than filmed, so it may not look exactly like you. Here's how it works.
