Selfie to GIF apps, compared.

These apps sound alike and do very different things. Some generate, some swap a face, and some just edit what you already filmed. Here's which is which.

We make MemeYou, so read this with that in mind. We aren't affiliated with the other apps. Their details come from their App Store listings, as checked on November 5, 2026, and they may have changed since. MemeYou is coming to iPhone and is not out yet.

Three different kinds of app

Generate a new reaction

You give one photo, and the app draws new frames. MemeYou works this way. You don't film anything, and the background stays yours. The trade-off is that generated frames can drift, so a result may not look exactly like you.

Swap your face into a clip

GifYou and GIF Face Swap AI keep an existing scene and replace the face. That's great when you want to be in one specific moment. Here's how face swapping compares with generating, including the rights question around famous clips.

Edit what you already have

ImgPlay, Momento and Lively turn your own photos, Live Photos and videos into GIFs. If you caught the moment on camera, these are the most faithful option, because nothing is invented. Our guide to making a GIF of yourself covers that route, with no app of ours involved.

Where MemeYou fits, and where it doesn't

MemeYou is for people who want a set of reactions for their chats and don't want to act them out. You pick from 7 packs of 12 preset reactions, and finished GIFs also show up as stickers in Messages. It also works from a photo of your own dog or cat.

It's not the right pick if you want to type your own idea, use a scene from a film, or make a GIF of a friend. It only accepts a photo of yourself or your own pet, it's iPhone only, and you must be 18 or older. A general assistant is another option, and here's what to expect from ChatGPT.

Common questions

Which app turns a selfie into a reaction GIF?

It depends on what you want in the GIF. MemeYou generates a new reaction from your photo. GifYou and GIF Face Swap AI put your face into existing scenes or GIFs. ImgPlay and Momento turn media you already have into a GIF.

What's the difference between face swap and generating a GIF?

A face swap keeps an existing clip and replaces the face in it. Generating makes new frames from your photo, so the whole picture is you, in your own setting.

Are these apps free?

Most have a paid tier, and prices change, so check each App Store listing before you decide. We don't list other apps' prices here because they go out of date.

Is this comparison neutral?

No comparison written by one of the apps can be fully neutral. We make MemeYou, and we say so. Every other row comes from that app's App Store listing, which we link, and you can check it yourself.
