How to put your face on a GIF.
You have two options: swap your face into a GIF that already exists, or generate a brand new one from a selfie. They look different and suit different things.
| Face swap | Generated from a selfie | |
|---|---|---|
| Starts from | An existing GIF or scene | Your photo |
| Background | The original clip | The setting of your photo |
| Body and clothes | Usually the original person's | Yours, from the photo |
| Good for | Being in one famous moment | Everyday reactions that are all you |
| The catch | The clip may belong to someone else | Details can drift, so it may not look exactly like you |
Option 1: swap your face into a GIF
Choose a GIF, add a selfie, and the app replaces the face. On iPhone, GifYou and GIF Face Swap AI both describe this in their listings, and GifJif does a cut-out version. We don't make these apps.
For a good swap, use a clear, front-facing photo, and pick a clip where the face is large and doesn't turn too far away. Most of these clips come from film, TV and memes, which someone owns, so keep that in mind if you plan to use one beyond your group chat.
Option 2: generate a new reaction
This is the approach we build. MemeYou takes one selfie and draws a looping reaction from it, such as a soap opera gasp or a suspicious sip. Nothing is pasted into someone else's clip. The reactions are original, written to feel like the moves everyone knows without copying a film or a real person.

You choose from preset packs and can't request a specific scene. If you want to be in one exact moment, a face swap app is the better tool. Want more options? We've compared the main apps side by side.
Common questions
Can I put my face on a GIF?
Yes. A face swap app replaces the face in an existing GIF with yours, using one selfie. You can also skip the existing GIF and generate a new one from your photo.
Is it legal to face swap into a movie GIF?
It depends on where you live and what you do with it. Film and TV clips belong to someone, and a real person's likeness can have its own protections. Sharing one with friends is very different from using it in an ad. This isn't legal advice.
Can I put a friend's face on a GIF?
Ask them first. Some face swap apps allow it, but it's their face. MemeYou doesn't allow it at all: it only accepts a photo of yourself or your own pet.
Does MemeYou use face swapping?
No. MemeYou doesn't paste your face into an existing clip. It generates new frames from your photo, so the reaction takes place in the setting of your photo.
Skip the swap.
MemeYou is coming soon to iPhone.
